“The NAE Grand Challenges Scholar program provided me with a framework to explore some of the toughest problems facing humanity. I participated in research aimed at understanding the unintended and undesired consequences of health information technology as part of the hands-on component. I also complemented my industrial & systems engineering coursework with minors in business finance and occupational science as part of the interdisciplinary component. Now that I have graduated, I am pursuing a career in health systems engineering to help make healthcare more efficient and improve the quality of care that patients receive. As a Grand Challenges Scholar, the most invaluable lesson that I have learned is that collaborating with engineers and leaders from other disciplines will be critical towards solving the grand challenges.”
