In order to address the grand challenges and to recognize the opportunities they present, it is imperative that we build a cadre of professionals who not only have the necessary science and engineering skills but also the cross-disciplinary knowledge, entrepreneurial spirit, global & multicultural perspective, a sense of service, and the ability to adopt a human systems engineering approach to identifying problem sets and solution sets needed to lead the world to meet the great challenges facing society in the 21st century.

The purpose of this meeting was to engage with leading engineering institutions and employers across India to discuss how best to educate the next generation of engineers who will be called on to solve the grand challenges of our times. The goal of the meeting was for participants to embrace a shared vision for educating the 21st century global engineer by creating a GCSP at their institution.

Participants heard from B.L. Ramakrishna (Director of the GCSP Network Office at the National Academy of Engineering, Washington DC), Yannis Yortsos (Dean of the University of Southern California’s Viterbi School of Engineering and one of the three co-founders of the GCSP), Raghu Raghavendra (Vice Dean for Global Academic Initiatives at USC), and Vinod Lohani (Professor and Director of Education & Global Initiatives at the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science, Virginia Tech). The participants has the opportunity to share experiences with similar educational innovations at their institutions, bring out the industry perspective on work force development, discuss challenges for integration and implementation of the GCSP across India, identify barriers for institutionalization and creative ways of surmounting those barriers, explore mechanisms and platforms to collaborate, and develop strategies for partnerships between academia, industry & aligned groups.
