On August 14-16, the City University of Hong Kong hosted a Grand Challenges Scholars Program workshop which drew academics, employers, students, GCSP alumni, regional and global NGOs, and other aligned organizations to catalyze the embrace of the GCSP throughout the region. The purpose of this invitation-only workshop was to:

  1. Inspire universities in East and South East Asia to establish Grand Challenges Scholars Programs;
  2. Make connections between active GCSPs in the region and institutions exploring establishing new programs;
  3. Support exchange and cooperation between US-based GCSPs and East and Southeast Asian GCSPs; and
  4. Directly engage both regional industry and multinational corporations interested in STEM education and workforce to help clarify the value of Grand Challenges Scholars to industry.

The workshop sought to address real and perceived barriers to GCSP implementation in East and Southeast Asia by highlighting the value of the program to students, educators, employers and government representatives in the region, and drawing upon the experiences, best practices and connections of established regional and US-based GCSPs. In so doing, the workshop also aimed to catalyze industry and other stakeholder interest in the GCSP as a cultivator of future engineering leaders for the region with multidisciplinary breadth, an entrepreneurial mindset and a global perspective.

Suggested attire for the meeting is business casual.
