Biography

Dean Kamen, an inventor, entrepreneur, and tireless advocate for science and technology, holds more than 440 U.S. and foreign patents, many of them for medical devices.  Mr. Kamen invented the first wearable infusion pump and then founded AutoSyringe Inc., a medical-device company to manufacture and market the pumps.  He later developed a number of other infusion devices at AutoSyringe, including the first insulin pump for diabetics. 

Mr. Kamen also founded DEKA Research and Development Corporation for the development of internally generated inventions; DEKA also conducts research for major corporate clients. 

In 1989, Mr. Kamen founded For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST), an organization dedicated to inspiring young people to learn about, use, and enjoy the fruits of science and technology.  The organization sponsors activities and competitions, such as FIRST Robotics Competition, FIRST Lego League, and FIRST Place, that engage young people in hands-on learning and fun. 

Mr. Kamen was awarded the National Medal of Technology for inventions that have advanced medical care worldwide and for awakening Americans to the excitement of science and technology.  He has also received the Lemelson-MIT Prize, has been inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, and was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
